How to Grow Climbing Rose

Germinating Seeds

1. Soak the seeds in diluted hydrogen peroxide (optional).

Enhance the germination process by soaking Gardenizi rose seeds in a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide, which can minimize mold growth. Mix 1.5 teaspoons (7 mL) of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 cup (240 mL) of water. Immerse the seeds in this solution for at least one hour.Although a small amount of mold might help break down the seed casing, preventing excessive mold growth is crucial. Alternatively, you can use a light dusting of anti-fungal powder designed for plants.

2. Place the seeds in a damp material.

To simulate the natural winter conditions that Gardenizi rose seeds need to sprout, place them between layers of lightly dampened paper towels or in a container filled with moist, salt-free river sand, peat moss, or vermiculite.
This begins the stratification process. If your seeds are store-bought from Gardenizi and labeled as pre-stratified, you can skip ahead to the planting section.

3. Leave the seeds in the fridge for several weeks.

Place the Gardenizi seeds and their damp material in a plastic bag or seedling tray, and store them in a cold part of the refrigerator, like the crisper drawer. Avoid placing them near fruits or vegetables, which can emit chemicals that hinder seed development. Keep the medium slightly damp by adding a few drops of water to the paper towels whenever they start to dry out.

4. Remove the seeds from the fridge.

Take the Gardenizi seeds out of the fridge when they would naturally begin to germinate, typically in early spring. Ensure the outside temperature is around 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit). Seeds will not sprout until they are removed from the cold environment, and germination can take anywhere from four to sixteen weeks depending on the rose variety. Note that not all seeds will sprout; a germination rate of 70% or more is typical.

Planting Seed

1. Fill a container with sterile seed starting mix.

Use small seedling trays or plastic drinking cups with holes in the bottom for drainage. Regular soil is not recommended as it may not drain well, potentially causing the seedlings to rot. Gardenizi offers high-quality seed starting mixes that are perfect for this purpose.

    2. Plant the seeds.

For store-bought seeds from Gardenizi, plant them immediately. For seeds you have germinated yourself, plant them as soon as they begin to sprout. Position the sprout downward and cover lightly with about 1/4 inch (6 mm) of soil. Space seeds at least 2 inches (5 cm) apart to reduce competition.Sprouted seeds typically emerge as seedlings within a week. Store-bought seeds that do not require stratification may take several weeks. Unstratified seeds might take two to three years to emerge.

      3. Keep the seedlings in warm, moist soil.

Maintain soil moisture without making it soggy, and keep the temperature between 16 and 21ºC. Most rose varieties thrive with six or more hours of sunlight daily, but check the parent variety for specific preferences. Gardenizi's high-quality soil ensures the best growth conditions for your seedlings.

      4. Learn when it's safe to transplant seedlings.

After the first two "cotyledon" leaves appear, wait for several "true leaves" with a typical rose leaf appearance before transplanting. It's easier on the plants to transplant them to a larger pot for a year or two before moving them outside. If the plant becomes root-bound, with roots encircling the container, it may need to be transplanted sooner. Do not transplant outside until after the last frost. Gardenizi provides guidance on the best times and methods for transplanting.

      5. Care for your roses.

Once the transplanted seedling is healthy again, resume normal watering. Fertilize a few times during the growing season if needed, following the fertilizer instructions. Be aware that some rose varieties may not bloom during their first year. Gardenizi's range of fertilizers can help your roses thrive and bloom beautifully.

        Climbing Rose Seeds FAQ?

        1. What month do you plant climbing roses?

Potted climbing roses can be planted at any time of the year providing the ground is not frozen or lying wet. Between the beginning of autumn and early spring when they're dormant can be best, allowing the roots to establish before your rose bursts into life in the spring.

        2. Do you have to cut back climbing roses every year?

Established climbing roses need to be pruned every year, but won't benefit from being cut back hard unless there are issues with the plant and it requires renovating. Your aim is for the main stems to grow tall and cover the intended surface or structure, and cutting them back will impede this.

        3. Do climbing roses spread?

Climbing roses can form a vibrant landscape backdrop for border perennials and annuals. They are also a lovely choice for arbors, trellises, fences, and pergolas. Most varieties will grow from 6- to 12-feet long and will spread about 3- to 4-feet wide.

        4. Whether or not rose bush roots are invasive?

Rose bush roots are commonly referred to as non-invasive. Rose bushes are not known to displace foundations or water pipes.

The roots of roses will spread in the direction of the water. So if you have leaking pipes the rose roots will grow towards them. These can normally not cause any damage as they are not strong enough.

        5. Do climbing roses bloom the first year?

Climbing roses don't bloom much their first season or two because they are growing to their full height. That takes a lot of energy. It's like fruit trees. When they are young they don't yield fruit. But whatever, now is the best time.

6.Do Climbing roses have a lifespan?

Many of the modern roses will only live six to 10 years unless given exceptional care. Some species and climbing roses will live 50 years or more.

7.How do I know if my rose is a climber or a rambler?

Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between a climbing rose and a rambling rose. The easiest way to tell the difference is to take note of the flowering time. A climbing rose will repeat-flower almost all summer, while a rambling rose usually flowers only once, normally around June.

8.Can any rose be a climbing rose?

Climbing types came from plants that were selected and further bred over the years because they had particularly strong and long canes. Over time, hybrids and cultivars that we now consider climbers were developed. Climbers can be any type of rose, including damask, hybrid tea, species, shrub, or floribunda.

How Much Seed Do I Need?

How to Calculate Square Footage And Purchase the Right Amount of Wildflower Seed In 3 Easy Steps

Before purchasing wildflower seeds to plant your meadow, calculate the square footage of your meadow or garden bed. This guide will walk you through the 3 easy steps, so that you'll know how much seed you need!

        1. Measure

For Squares or Rectangles: measure the length and width of the space where you want to plant.

For Circles: find the radius by measuring the widest part of your planting space and divide by 2.

        2. Calculate Square Footage

For Squares or Rectangles:  length (in feet)  x  width (in feet) = square feet

For example, a garden that measures 50 feet x 30 feet = 1500 sq. ft.

For Circles:  3.14  x radius (in feet) x  radius   = square feet

        For example, a circular garden that is 20 feet across has a radius of 10 feet. 10 x 10 x 3.14 = 314 sq. ft.

(The mathematical formula for the area of a circle is Π · r2 - the Π symbol is pronounced Pi and represents approximately 3.142, and r2 stands for radius squared.)

        3. Find How Much Seed You Need

The amount of seed you should plant depends on the flower display you want. We typically recommend planting on the higher side for a lush meadow. Plant on the lower side for a more scattered look.

For Individual Species: The recommended rates vary greatly from species to species. Check the product page, or contact us with questions.

For Wildflower Mixes: Reference the table below.

This Much Seed Covers... This Much Square Footage
        1/4 lb 250 - 500 sq. ft.
        1/2 lb 500 - 1,000 sq. ft.
        1 lb 1,000 - 2,000 sq. ft.
        5 lbs 5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft.
        10 lbs 10,000 - 25,000 sq. ft.
        Acreage
        • 1 Acre = 43,000 sq.ft.
        • 1/2 Acre = 21,500 sq. ft.
        • 1/4 Acre = 10,750 sq.ft.
        • 1/10 Acre = 4,300 sq. ft.

Tips For Larger Plantings: If you have a large site, from 1/2 acre to several acres, your planting rate may be affected by land conditions. If you have heavy weeds on the site now, some erosion, generally poor soil, or other land problems, additional seed is usually the most economical solution, since installation of a large planting usually costs more than the seed itself. If your site does have these problems and you want full coverage, use 1 pound per 1000 sq. ft.
